CLIMATE

Ancient Pompeii had a Mediterranean climate where summers were balmy and parch with cool wet winters. The Mediterranean climate additionally brought more rain as Pompeii was known to have the most rainfall throughout the whole of Italy.

SPRING

Spring in Pompeii was moderately hot with quite frequent sunshine. Amidst the first few days of spring in March, Pompeii’s temperature gradually increases from 13°C to about 15°C in March. The temperature then continued to develop until it was 23°C in May. Hence with the hot temperatures, rainfall progressively decreases with only 76mm in April and 51mm by the end of May. Although evening temperatures only range from 8°C to 10°C, the moderate escalation of temperature soon leads to the season of summer in Pompeii.

SUMMER

During the summer season, Pompeii encountered blistering hot temperature varying from 26°C or as high as 30°C. The summer in Pompeii lasted throughout June to September. The sun was always shining with rays of heat, and thus, summer was when Pompeii had the least amount of rainfall.  With very minimum rainfall, Pompeii was always at its driest through the time of summer. Periodic cool sea breezes occurred throughout summer but never kept the exceptionally high temperatures at bay. These occasional winds at night, however, did lower the temperatures during summer evenings to around 20°C. Although rainfall increases during September, summer season in Pompeii was dominantly scorching hot and dry, with only light rains or drizzles which happened throughout the season.

AUTUMN

Ancient Pompeii’s autumn occurred through October to November with the first few days being sunny and pleasing. However, rainfall started to become regular in November.  Temperatures drop to about 21°C in October while November was approximately 17°C.  As a result, sunshine was less persistent with only 4 hours a day during November.  Nevertheless, the Mediterranean climate affected the temperatures throughout autumn as the sea maintained a constant temperature of 20°C.

WINTER

Winter in ancient Pompeii only vary from 14°C or above for the first several days of winter but reached to 4°C or lower at night time in January and February. The temperatures were around 12°C during January but increased back to approximately 13°C in February. With the low temperatures, frosts and snow slowly developed throughout the season of winter in Pompeii. Furthermore, rainfall during winter increased to 122mm in December but gradually decreased to only 99mm in February.  December was believed to have been the darkest month as the sun could only be seen for only three hours a day. With the low level of sunshine, the Mediterranean Sea’s cold temperatures caused Pompeii to fog up.
