SIMILARITIES & DIFFERENCES

Although comparing both ancient and modern Pompeii, there is a huge jump from the gap of time. This thus brings a few comparisons many have yet to notice.

General

Pompeii is now acknowledged as Pompei. The city of Pompeii was once a beautiful and glorious city but with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius it is now destroyed and in not a very pleasant condition. Thus, “Lively” and “alive” can no longer be used to describe Pompeii.

Clothes

Clothing is extremely unalike with the gradual modern day clothes being introduced to Pompeii from tourists around the globe. Pompeiians no longer wear tunics or chitons but wear shirts, pants, skirts etc. Thus, class system is rarely used and acknowledged from clothing.

Entertainment

Source of entertainment has changed substantially. Killing and death was a famous form of entertainment many romans adored and loved in ancient Rome, however, now entertainment does not involve physically injuring others. Video games, movies, swimming etc. have been established in Pompei. These forms of entertainment have come with the technological advance in the society affecting many other customs of Pompeiians. Although plays and performances may commence in Pompei, this ancient Pompeii entertainment is rarely ever conducted. Therefore, entertainments are now more luxurious and comfortable for all Pompeiian citizens.

Food

Food has been widely introduced with the significant eruption of Mount Vesuvius making Pompei a crucial historical site. Many foods have either been enhanced or anew. This opens up the Pompeiians perspective to the whole world from the very different tastes.

Class System

The class system originally used in ancient Pompeii is no longer used in the modern Pompei society. Although it is still a democratic country, it is no longer ruled by an empire and lower classed Pompeiians, such as slaves or freed people, are not classified anymore. Pompei is now an equal society with no sexism towards women. Thus, women are now not restricted to certain laws and have gradually had the increase of equal women rights. With no classification between the upper and lower classed romans, crimes are not punished in the same way and so the average life span of Pompeiians have been increasing and is still increasing with advancements in technology.

Technology Advancements

As stated in many above, technology has affected Pompei society significantly. Medicines are now being more commonly used to heal and are affordable to many others and not just the wealthy. Additionally, additional instruments are included in Pompeiian orchestras and deadly weapons are now being used, this technological advancement has taken Pompei into a whole different and unfamiliar society.

Climate

Climate in Pompeii has never changed and although the time period around the eruption of Mount Vesuvius had an abrupt climate change from the heat, the climate from ancient Pompeii and modern Pompei are very similar. The Mediterranean climate has remained the same throughout the years, in spite of a few minor temperature range differences. The Mediterranean climate will never change, with the summers being blistering hot and dry, and wet winters.

Layout

The layout of Pompeii, although modified slightly, compared with both, it is extremely similar. Important streets are still visible and used for shopping. Additionally fast food restaurants still run throughout the city in the same areas. Other streets and houses are placed in the same area for tourists to visit. Ampiphieatre, although ruined, are displayed in Pompei. However, with the dust and the gradual recovery from Mount Vesuvius, Pompei is a little hard to recognize its layout. Nevertheless, the eruption did not ruin the whole of Pompei with its layout still intact.

Government System

From ancient Pompeii to modern Pompei, the country, Italy, has always been a democratic country, which means their leader is always elected by the people of Italy.

Multicultural

Pompeii has always contained several cultural groups within its society. With foreigners and Latins from ancient Pompeii and tourists in the modern society, Pompei could never have been any more multicultural. Additionally, with the trading still occurring from ancient Pompeii, Pompeii’s wide range of ethnicity has never been more similar.

Legal System

Laws of modern Pompei are quite similar to those of ancient Pompeii, this included property ownership, divorce laws, inheritance etc. Despite the fact that a few minor laws have been made, market economy laws have never changed. Thus, the laws are extremely well structured and Pompei citizens oblige to those laws.

Military Services

The compulsory military service in modern Pompei is parallel to the military services of ancient Pompeii. This military has been quite dependent on other countries but consists of quite a professional army.

Religion

Religion in Pompeii was quite simple, worshiping those you wish to as long as it was legal. The population of Christian gradually increased to today, but Pompeiian citizens are still free to choose their own religious beliefs.
